Hyangiram Hermitage

향일암

A cliffside hermitage for the South Sea sunrise

Hours
About 5am–7pm, sunrise to sunset
Address
60 Hyangilam-ro, Dolsan-eup, Yeosu

This hermitage clings to a cliff at the very end of Dolsan Island, on the slope of Geumosan. A path squeezes between rocks and caves, then opens onto the South Sea; the name means roughly facing the sun. The rock pattern looks like a turtle shell, so it is also called Yeonggunam. A fire in 2009 destroyed the main hall, and the buildings were restored by about 2012.
