Wonju travel info
Wonju sits in a basin carved by the Seom River at the western edge of Gangwon Province. The train from Seoul takes about an hour, and the view out of the window is already mountains. At Ganhyeon, the Sogeumsan suspension bridge hangs about 100 metres above a gorge, and after the wobbly Ulleong bridge next to it, lunch tastes very good on shaky legs.
Downtown has several old markets. Miro Market is a tangle of lanes where getting lost is part of it, and Jungang Market has a beef alley. Wonju-style loach soup is spiced with gochujang and loaded with potato and water dropwort, and kimchi dumplings dropped into noodle soup are a local comfort order.
For a quiet day, head to Museum SAN inside Oak Valley and walk its buildings and gardens slowly. Go up to Guryongsa on Chiaksan and the smell of the forest changes. Ganhyeon, Museum SAN and Chiaksan lie in different directions from the centre, so pick two or three for a day.
