Uljin travel info
Uljin is the far north of Gyeongbuk, on the East Sea just below Gangwon. At Jukbyeon port, snow-crab boats head out from about 3 a.m. and start coming back around 6, when the auction begins. Down south in Hupo, the Deunggisan Skywalk runs 135 m out over the sea with a 57 m stretch of clear glass floor. About 20 km inland, the old Silla temple Bulyeongsa sits at the foot of Mt. Cheonchuksan, with the 13 km Bulyeong Valley running past it.
Food here is simple. Snow crab is the winter-to-early-spring draw: the season opens in December and runs to April, with the meatiest crabs said to come in February and March. Haegakpo, crab legs steamed and sun-dried for three or four days, and winter gomchi soup are what locals eat. In autumn, matsutake from the Geumgang pine forests turn up.
Uljin is long and narrow. Jukbyeon to Hupo is nearly 50 km, and Bulyeongsa and the hot springs lie inland. Since late 2025 the KTX-Eum has stopped at Uljin Station on the Donghae Line, so the train now works. Local buses still run sparsely, so a car helps a lot.
