Taean travel info

Taean is a long, jagged peninsula on the western tip of South Chungcheong. Look at a map and the coastline is serrated, with a beach tucked into nearly every notch: Mallipo in the north, the Sinduri dunes and Mongsanpo in the middle, Kkotji out on Anmyeondo island. Taeanhaean National Park wraps most of the shore.

A typical day runs like this. Morning on the Sinduri dunes, where the wind has rippled the sand like water. Midday at Baeksajang harbour market picking out blue crab or king prawns. Sunset at Kkotji, watching the sun go down between two rocks. In autumn the crab season fills every soy-marinated crab restaurant, and in spring tulips cover the Korea Flower Park.

It's a little over two hours from Seoul by express bus, but the sights are scattered along the whole peninsula, and buses alone make two or three stops a day feel tight. Most visitors rent a car, or base themselves in one beach town and call taxis from there.
