A gongsimdon is a hollow watchtower where guards stood inside and watched through openings. Hwaseong had three, in the northwest, south and northeast. This one is built of brick rather than stone, so its colour jumps out against the stone wall, and its inner path is known to wind upward in a spiral. You meet it on the stretch between Yeonmudae and Changnyongmun, and it is a good photo stop.
