An hour north of Sokcho you reach the civilian control line. You show ID at the entry post, collect a visitor pass, pass the checkpoint and drive up to the lookout. On a clear day the Haegumgang coast and the ridge of Mt. Kumgang sit across the water, and the telescopes pull in the North Korean shoreline. After a visit the line on the map feels real. Go in the morning for shorter queues and better visibility.
