Refugees from Hamgyong Province began settling here in 1951 after the Korean War. In their dialect an older man is called abai, which gave the village its name. Murals along the narrow lanes tell stories of those years, and a sign marks the spot used in the drama Autumn in My Heart. Restaurants on almost every alley serve northern dishes such as squid sundae, abai sundae and Hamhung cold noodles.
