Japanese colonial authorities built this prison in 1908 and held independence fighters here; Yu Gwan-sun died in it. The red-brick cell blocks, a basement exhibition recreating torture scenes, and an execution room remain as they were. The mood is heavy and quiet. It is one of the places in Seoul where modern Korean history feels most direct, and many foreign visitors come.
