Sancheong travel info
Sancheong is an inland county where Jirisan's highest peak, Cheonwangbong, straddles the border. Donguibogam Village gathers a museum of Korean medicine and herb experience halls, and from its suspension bridge the valley drops away below. Further south, the lanes of Namsa Yedamchon run between mud-and-stone walls, with a persimmon tree over 600 years old in the middle of the village. Up in the Daewonsa valley the water is cold even in summer.
Food comes down from the mountain. Black pork raised at around 500 m turns up grilled, or in a stew with long-aged kimchi. Herb duck soup, a spread of mountain greens and catfish stew by the stream follow. In winter, Gojongsi persimmons hang drying at farms around Sicheon.
No train stops in Sancheong. There are five direct intercity buses a day from Seoul, or you can change buses at Jinju. Donguibogam Village, Namsa Yedamchon and Daewonsa are 20–40 minutes apart by car, so local buses rarely manage more than two stops a day. A rental car, or a taxi booked one leg at a time, is much easier.
