Pohang travel info
Pohang is known first as a steel town, but on the map the coast is the longer story. Yeongildae, on the north side of Yeongil Bay, is counted as the biggest beach on the east coast, and at the southern tip, Homigot, a bronze sculpture of two hands rises straight out of the sea. People turn up there before dawn for the sunrise.
In town, Jukdo Market is the anchor. Fish stalls, dried seafood and street food run along its lanes, and snow crab, mulhoe and gwamegi take turns on the table by season. At Hwanho Park, the Space Walk is a steel staircase path that stretches out over the park, lit up at night with a view toward the harbour. Further south in Guryongpo, mori noodles and snow crab restaurants line the port.
From Seoul it takes about two and a half hours by KTX. Pohang Station sits up in Heunghae-eup, not in the centre, and with such a long coastline you will want a bus or a car for Homigot and Guryongpo.
