Inside the Asia Publication Culture and Information Center, this is a hall where shelves climb right to the ceiling. Some rows are out of reach without a ladder. Books donated by publishers and scholars can be pulled down by anyone, and people read on the floor and the steps. Even at midday voices drop, and what you hear first is pages turning.
