Namwon travel info

Namwon is where the Korean folktale of Chunhyang begins. Step into Gwanghalluwon and the Ojakgyo bridge crosses the pond, with carp crowding under the pavilion. Legend has the young Mongryong first spotting Chunhyang on a swing right here, so a couple or two in rented hanbok is usually posing on the bridge. After dark the entry fee disappears and the pavilion lights come on.

The food story is chueotang, loach soup. Restaurants line the streets near the garden's main gate, and one has been going since the 1950s. It began as a way to rebuild strength with the loaches caught in autumn paddies, so October feels like the right month. Snail soup from Jirisan's streams and a set meal of seasoned greens rice with grilled short-rib patties are worth ordering too.

The town centre is walkable to Gwanghalluwon and Chunhyang Theme Park, but half of Namwon lies outside it. East are the Jirisan foothills with Yukmojeong, Jeongnyeongchi and Baemsagol, and royal azaleas on Baraebong in spring. The KTX station sits away from the centre, so expect one more bus or taxi after you arrive. Give Jirisan its own day, or rent a car.
