Mungyeong travel info

Mungyeong is home to Mungyeong Saejae, the mountain pass that scholars from the southeast walked over on their way to Seoul for the Joseon civil-service exams. Past Juheulgwan, the first gate, a dirt road runs for about 6 km with a stream murmuring alongside. In autumn the maple leaves settle on the path, and plenty of people walk it barefoot.

The pass is only part of it. Former coal mines have become a museum and a rail-bike line where you pedal along old track, and at Jinnam Gyoban the upper Namhan River curls under a stone bridge. The table runs to mountain greens, and omija berries, Gamhong apples and yakdol hanu beef are what this area grows.

The city splits into two parts. Saejae, Mungyeong Station and Mungyeong Bus Terminal are in Mungyeong-eup in the north, while city hall and the Jeomchon terminal are over 20 km south in Jeomchon. Mix up 'Mungyeong' and 'Jeomchon' when you buy a bus ticket and you lose the whole first hour.
