Pungnammun Gate
풍남문
The one gate left of Jeonju’s old city wall
- Address
- 1 Pungnammun 3-gil, Wansan-gu, Jeonju
This was the south gate of Jeonju’s city wall, and it is the only part still standing. Treasure No. 308. After a fire in 1767 it was rebuilt the next year and given the name Pungnammun; when the walls were torn down in 1907 for urban planning, the gate was left. Its lower pillars carry straight up to the upper corners, a rare layout for a Korean gate tower. It sits in the middle of a traffic circle, so it works better as a quick look, and better again when lit at night.
