The crater was blown out by an eruption under the sea and now sits tied to the island by a thin neck of land. The stairs from the gate to the rim take about 30 minutes, and at the top the bowl drops away in a ring of green. Most people time the climb for sunrise, but the view over Udo and the water off Seongsan is just as good by day. It was listed as UNESCO natural heritage in 2007. You cannot walk into the crater itself; you look down from the rim.
