Construction began in 553 and kept growing over generations. The nine-storey wooden pagoda finished in 645 burned in the Mongol invasion, and now only rows of foundation stones are left. Standing at the pagoda's spot and looking out over the grounds gives you a sense of scale. The history centre next door shows a one-tenth model of the pagoda.
