Unjoru House

운조루

A 250-year-old manor with a rice chest by the gate

Address
59 Unjoru-gil, Toji-myeon, Gurye

This manor was built in 1776 for a Joseon-era scholar family. Inside the tall gate you find the men's quarters and a wide yard, and in one wing a big wooden rice chest. The carved words on it mean that anyone may open it and take rice. The story of a house that fed hungry neighbours is what it is known for. Sit on the wooden floor for a while and watch the rooflines toward Jirisan.
