- 539 Hwaeomsa-ro, Masan-myeon, Gurye
A big temple sits at the mouth of a valley on the western flank of Jirisan. Past the main gate, stone steps climb through terraced courtyards until Gakhwangjeon rises at the top. It is the largest wooden hall in Korea, and you end up tilting your head back under its eaves. The stone lantern in front is a national treasure too, so cameras never rest. The path follows a loud stream, which is why many people start their Gurye trip here.
