Gimhae travel info

Gimhae was the capital of the Gaya kingdom some two thousand years ago. In the middle of town you can walk a pine-lined path at the Royal Tomb of King Suro, then five minutes on reach Bonghwangdae Park, where grassy mounds sit over the remains of Gaya houses. Add the museum and the Daeseong-dong tombs and half a day is gone before you notice. Few cities keep so much this old this close together.

Food starts with dwitgogi, scraps of pork grilled over charcoal or on an iron plate, cheap and generous and long a local habit. Catfish soup, eel and knife-cut noodles are also on the city's list of signature dishes. Out in Jangyu, ordinary neighbourhood restaurants serve things like cold noodles and pork cutlets.

The airport is right next door, so Gimhae slots neatly into the first or last day of a Busan trip. The Busan-Gimhae Light Rail links the centre to Sasang, but for Gaya Theme Park or the Nakdong River Rail Park you will want a car or taxi.
