Geoje travel info
Geoje is South Korea's second-largest island, but bridges make it feel like an extension of the mainland. Inside it's something else: at Okpo and Gohyeon, the cranes of two of the world's biggest shipyards cut across the sky, and a few bends down the coastal road you reach Hakdong, where black pebbles clatter in the surf.
Most trips start and end on a boat. From Jangseungpo you can cruise between the cliffs of Haegeumgang or land at Oedo Botania for a couple of hours among the gardens. Windy Hill and Shinseondae are ten minutes apart by car, and plenty of people finish the day on a pebble beach with sashimi and a bottle of soju. Winter brings cod soup and grilled oysters, spring brings sea squirt.
Public transport is thin, so a car makes everything easier. From Busan Seobu terminal it's a little over an hour by bus, which makes Geoje an easy day or two added to a Busan trip. In the rainy season and typhoon months, cruises get cancelled often, so check the weather first.
