Gangneung travel info

Gangneung is the main city on Gangwon's East Sea coast, about two hours from Seoul by KTX, with the beaches a short bus or taxi ride beyond the station. At Gyeongpo Beach, pine woods stand behind a long strip of pale sand, and behind the pines there is a lake. Climb to the pavilion at Gyeongpodae, on the hill by the lake, and you get the lake and the sea in a single view.

South along the coast is Anmok Beach's coffee street, where every seaside window has someone with a cup, watching the waves. Gangneung's food is part of the trip too: soft tofu in the Chodang tofu village near Gyeongpo, stuffed squid and spicy knife-cut noodles at Jungang Market, potato dumpling soup. Ojukheon and the Seonggyojang mansion sit close to Gyeongpo Lake. People who want sunrise head to Jeongdongjin, and people who want the fish market go to Jumunjin. Both are inside Gangneung.

The KTX station is on the edge of the centre, so you need a bus, taxi or car to reach the sea. Gyeongpo, Anmok, Jeongdongjin and Jumunjin are well apart, and trying to hit all four in a day eats the time in transit. Pick one area to sleep in and build the rest around it.
