Danyang travel info

Danyang is a small town in the far east of North Chungcheong Province, where the Namhan River loops beneath the Sobaek Mountains. More than eight tenths of the county is mountain, so the town squeezes onto a thin strip of riverbank and every road ends quickly in a cliff or water. Dodamsambong, three rock peaks standing in mid-river, is the first of the Eight Views of Danyang. A short drive from town a glass-floored lookout hangs off a cliff, and the Danyang River Jando, a wooden walkway bolted to the cliff face, runs just above the water.

In town, Gugyeong Market is the day's centre. Danyang is known for its cold-climate garlic, and almost every stall sells something made with it: garlic sundae, garlic dumplings, garlic tteokgalbi, black-garlic fried chicken. Plenty of people walk the lanes with one in each hand. In the evening the standard order at town restaurants is a pot of spicy stew made with mandarin fish from the Namhan. There are several caves too, so a rainy day isn't a problem.

The KTX-Eum from Seoul's Cheongnyangni Station gets here in under an hour and a half. The catch is that Danyang Station is on the south side of the river, away from the town, so you need one more bus or taxi. Sleep in town and the rest is easy on foot.
