Daejeon travel info

Daejeon is a railway city where the Gyeongbu and Honam lines split. It's about an hour from Seoul by KTX, and once you step out in front of Daejeon Station you can see the line forming for Sungsimdang. That bakery started in 1956 as a street stall selling steamed buns near the station. A city that train crowds poured through needed noodles that were fast and cheap, so kalguksu shops sit on nearly every block. Dubu-duruchigi, tofu stir-fried in red-pepper sauce with noodles stirred in at the end, is a dish that grew up here.

Head west from the station and you reach Yuseong. Hot-spring hotels line the streets, and people sit barefoot at the foot baths in Yurim Park. The Daedeok research complex runs alongside, and the grounds of the 1993 Daejeon Expo still hold the Hanbit Tower and science museums. Hanbat Arboretum faces the Expo park from across the road, so the two walk together easily.

The city is wide and spread out, so you'll be moving between districts. The subway is a single Line 1 running from Daejeon Station toward Yuseong, so the main decision is whether to sleep near the station or in Yuseong; buses and taxis cover the rest. A day trip from Seoul works, but bread, noodles and a hot-spring soak all fit better with one night.
