The market opened near the provincial governor's compound in 1658 and has kept going ever since. Step into the Namseong-ro herb alley and the smell of dried roots and bark fills the street, with sacks of herbs stacked at every shop door. The oriental medicine museum inside re-creates an old pharmacy, and entry is free. Each May a herbal medicine culture festival takes over the street.
