Daegu travel info

Daegu sits in a basin ringed by mountains. In summer the heat has nowhere to go, daytime highs hover around 31°C, and locals have turned the misery into a nickname. Visitors walk anyway. Step ten paces off the Dongseongno shopping streets and you reach the twin spires of red-brick Gyesan Cathedral; climb Cheongnaeondeok hill and green-shuttered Western-style missionary houses, over a century old, line the slope. This "Modern Alley" area costs nothing to enter and takes about half a day.

Mealtimes show the city's real face. Grilled beef tripe dipped in doenjang, ttaro-gukbap with the rice and soup served apart, and napjak-mandu, flat dumplings pan-fried and dunked in soy sauce, all live here. Seomun Market's night stalls light up after dark, and the Kim Kwang-seok mural street keeps the singer's face on its walls. At Suseongmot Lake, pedal swans drift under the sunset; head out to Apsan or to the Gatbawi Buddha on Palgongsan for a view over the whole basin.

The high-speed train from Seoul takes about 1h40. Dongdaegu Station is attached to the metro and the express bus terminal, so transfers are easy. Two metro lines and buses cover most of the city, and Daegu is a natural gateway to Gyeongju, Andong and Pohang if you are building a Yeongnam route.
