Cheonan travel info

Cheonan is the gateway to South Chungcheong, forty minutes from Seoul by KTX. Step out at Cheonan Station and the smell of baking walnut cakes reaches you first. Hodugwaja are said to have been invented here in 1934, and the shops around the station still bag them hot.

Dinner is sundae. East of the city, Byeongcheon has rows of sundae-soup restaurants near the old Aunae market, and the city centre has places that open the day with a bowl. Every March 1 the Aunae market stages a re-enactment of the 1919 independence demonstration. The Independence Hall of Korea sits about 12 km east of the centre and is free to enter; its maple paths turn red late in autumn.

Cheonan is big and has two centres. Cheonan-Asan, where the KTX stops, is well away from downtown, so you need Line 1 or a bus for the last stretch. Walnut cakes and the market are at Cheonan Station; evenings tend to happen in Dujeong-dong or Buldang-dong. If you want the Independence Hall and Byeongcheon in one day, check bus times or bring a car.
