Buyeo travel info

Buyeo was Sabi, the last capital of the Baekje kingdom, from 538 to 660. It's a small town where the ruins keep coming. Busosanseong fortress climbs the hill behind the old palace, Jeongnimsaji is a temple site where only a five-storey stone pagoda is left standing, and Gungnamji is a royal pond. All of them are within a reasonable walk of the bus terminal. Seeing that pagoda in the middle of town makes it clear you've landed in a place about fifteen hundred years old.

In summer Gungnamji fills with lotus. The wooden bridge out to the little Poryongjeong pavilion in the middle of the pond is the town's best-known scene, and the three-day Seodong Lotus Festival in early July draws crowds. For lunch, head to Gudeurae ferry landing on the Baekma River, where lotus-leaf rice, grilled eel and hanu beef places cluster. Nakhwaam cliff is reached by the path up through Busosanseong.

No train line comes here. From Seoul it's a little over two hours by bus to Buyeo Intercity Bus Terminal, right in the middle of town, so if you sleep nearby you can do most of it on foot. English isn't widely spoken, so keep a map app open.
