Boseong travel info

Boseong is a mountainous county pressed up against the south coast of Jeonnam, and almost every slope is planted in rows of tea bushes. Around 40% of Korea's green tea comes from here. The stepped green waves you've seen in photos are at Daehan Dawon and the Botjae area in Hoecheon-myeon. Climb the paths between the rows and the top lookout shows a reservoir and, further off, the sea at Deukryang Bay. On the way down, nearly everyone buys a green-tea ice cream at the shop by the entrance.

The county is too big to be only about tea. Yulpo Beach has a pine grove running along the water, and further east the town of Beolgyo is the setting of the novel Taebaek Mountains. After the literature museum, lunch is almost decided for you: Beolgyo is famous for cockles, so you eat a set meal with seasoned cockles, cockle pancakes and cockle bibimbap. In Boseong town a few restaurants put green-tea powder into things like tteokgalbi.

There are two train stops, Boseong Station in the town and Beolgyo Station in the east, both on the Gyeongjeon Line. The KTX doesn't stop in either, so there is no one-ride trip from Seoul. Most people take an intercity bus from Gwangju or switch to the Gyeongjeon Line at Suncheon or Gwangju-Songjeong. The tea fields, the beach and Beolgyo sit far apart, so a car makes a one-day loop much easier.
